{"id":2032,"date":"2012-08-19T07:24:51","date_gmt":"2012-08-19T07:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/?p=2032"},"modified":"2012-08-19T07:24:51","modified_gmt":"2012-08-19T07:24:51","slug":"ailsas-travel-photography-sunset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=2032","title":{"rendered":"Ailsa&#039;s travel photo challenge:  Sunset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ailsa suggested we post a photo of a memorable sunset this week.\u00a0 On her blog she has photos of US sunsets in soft lavender, pink and yellow hues:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/wheresmybackpack.com\/2012\/08\/17\/sunset\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/wheresmybackpack.com\/2012\/08\/17\/sunset\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The best sunset I&#8217;ve ever seen was almost a physical experience.\u00a0 Unlike the US sunsets, this one was a solid ball of gold in an unclouded New Caledonian sky.\u00a0 I had noticed the fiery sun low in the sky, just above the ocean, but before I could become too contemplative, it descended into the water and I couldn&#8217;t look away.\u00a0 Only seconds passed from the moment I first saw it to its disappearance below the horizon, as though it had drowned in the sea.\u00a0 I could almost hear a hiss!\u00a0 I stood in confusion, knowing that the earth had moved, not the sun.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m currently translating a small book of New Caledonian legends by Claudine Jacques, colourfully illustrated by Papou, so when I saw Ailsa&#8217;s suggestion of sunset images I immediately thought of late afternoons in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia.\u00a0 This Pacific island, not far from the north-eastern coast of Australia, is a French &#8216;special collectivity&#8217;.\u00a0 That is, it used to be a territory colonised by the French from 1854, but now the people are working towards independence and power is gradually being transferred from France to New Caledonia over a 20 year period, looking towards 2018.\u00a0 Unless the French can convince them otherwise.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2038\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worth.id.au\/wish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/noumeasunset1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2038\" title=\"NoumeaSunset1\" src=\"http:\/\/worth.id.au\/wish\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/noumeasunset1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/noumeasunset1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/noumeasunset1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/noumeasunset1-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winter Sunset, Noumea, New Caledonia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ailsa suggested we post a photo of a memorable sunset this week.\u00a0 On her blog she has photos of US sunsets in soft lavender, pink and yellow hues:\u00a0 http:\/\/wheresmybackpack.com\/2012\/08\/17\/sunset\/ The best sunset I&#8217;ve ever seen was almost a physical experience.\u00a0 Unlike the US sunsets, this one was a solid ball of gold in an unclouded &hellip;
