{"id":5078,"date":"2013-10-13T09:46:55","date_gmt":"2013-10-13T09:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/?p=5078"},"modified":"2013-10-13T09:46:55","modified_gmt":"2013-10-13T09:46:55","slug":"journey-to-the-centre-great-middle-lines-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=5078","title":{"rendered":"Journey to the centre:  Great middle lines &#8211; 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arthur Conan Doyle&#8217;s <em>A Study in Scarlet<\/em> is the first of his novels about the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr Watson.\u00a0 I turned to the physical centre of the book to find its change of direction, and came across a long paragraph describing a Mormon caravan of wagons, horses, walkers, and toddlers, all making their way towards the West of the great North American Continent.\u00a0 The Mormons are a source of some major players in the story.<\/p>\n<p>However, the novel has two parts, and I found at the centres of Part I and Part II the kind of mysterious statements that urge the reader to read on and discover how Sherlock solves the crime.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through Part I, a shonky detective, Lestrade, believes a murderer has written part of the name Rachel on the wall, in blood.\u00a0 But Sherlock&#8217;s logical reasoning produces a different theory on how the man was murdered:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">&#8220;Poison,&#8221; said Sherlock Holmes curtly, and strode off. &#8220;One other thing, Lestrade,&#8221; he added, turning round at the door: &#8220;&#8216;Rache,&#8217; is the German for &#8216;revenge&#8217;;\u00a0 so don&#8217;t lose your time looking for Miss Rachel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"File:Friston-holmes.gif\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/a8\/Friston-holmes.gif\/387px-Friston-holmes.gif\" width=\"387\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Original illustration of Holmes with magnifying glass, by D.
