colours of New Zealand:  Hawke&#8217;s Bay, North Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After spending time in <a href=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=5210\">Auckland<\/a>, New Zealand, and driving through the <a href=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=5245\">volcanic plateau<\/a>, we moved on for a great week in Hawke&#8217;s Bay on the east coast of the North Island.\u00a0 Again, as last week, I found broad strokes of individual colours wherever we went.\u00a0 There was plenty of:<\/p>\n<p>BLUE<\/p>\n<p>A matching blue bay and sky:\u00a0 the view from our accommodation.\u00a0 Most NZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>YELLOW<\/p>\n<p>As in Auckland, there are lots of white houses in Hawke&#8217;s Bay, especially the older wooden houses, the type that survive earthquakes.\u00a0 But there are plenty of creative individuals living here, like the neighbours who built a house with a cylinder attached and painted it with a yellow that says &#8216;look at me!&#8217;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"caption-attachment-5340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Houses old and new, Napier, NZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>PINK<\/p>\n<p>Red Valerian is a beautiful flower that&#8217;s not red but rather a couple of shades of pink, and springs up in any crack where a seed has fallen.\u00a0 In New Zealand I saw it growing in most gardens, jutting out of retaining walls, through rockfall-catching wire on cliff faces, and on the seashore.\u00a0 Some call it a weed, some call it a colourful filler.\u00a0 No doubt it needs to be controlled.\u00a0 I took this photo in drizzle under a grey sky.\u00a0 The blue days had passed&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5299\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a flowers around Hawke&#8217;s Bay which there should be more of, like Bird of Paradise with its orange crests.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5302\" leaf-littered paths that wound uphill through Tiffen Park, we saw masses of blue and purple flowers growing wild.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re called but I hope they&#8217;re not invaders.\u00a0 Here we were about a third of the way up the hill.\u00a0 When you go to New Zealand, you go up a lot of steps, steep streets and driveways, hills and cliffs.\u00a0 But going down feels really good!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5304\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5304\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/13\/the-colours-of-new-zealand-hawkes-bay-north-island-2\/tiffen-park-napier-nz\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5304\"><img loading=\"lazy\" id=\"caption-attachment-5304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tiffen Park, Napier, NZ<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>COLOURLESS<\/p>\n<p>On the walls and in parks in Napier, there are quotations written or sculpted which offer promise and hope.\u00a0 They are signs that this town has not only revived after a horrendous earthquake back in 1931 but is thriving partly because of it.\u00a0 The town was rebuilt in Art Deco, the style of the time, and today it is unique as an example of this architecture constructed in the two-year period 1931\/32.\u00a0 The quotation below which I saw painted in an otherwise interest-free alley is a reminder that good things can come from bad.\u00a0 If you can read backwards, that is.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5326\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5326\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/13\/the-colours-of-new-zealand-hawkes-bay-north-island-2\/thoreau-quotation-napier\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5326\"><img loading=\"lazy\" constructed in the Art Deco style after the earthquake and recently refurbished, attracting masses of tourists each week.\u00a0 It&#8217;s open to the public and just as handsome inside.<\/p>\n<figure Robert McDonald, up to a peak, Te Mata, where he recounted the history of Maori in New Zealand.\u00a0 In the photo below he stands next to his tribe&#8217;s pou whenua, or land post.\u00a0 Its face is carved like that of Robert&#8217;s ancestor, one of the Waim<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\">\u0101rama<\/span> chiefs who signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1841 with the European settlers.
