the widest possible range of colour nuances are found in a rich spectrum in the boldest contrasts.\u00a0 Only when you have studied the colours of bark close up can you appreciate why tree trunks have such luminous colours from afar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6732 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/12\/eucalypt-forest-jervis-bay.jpg?w=750\" alt=\"Eucalypt forest, Jervis Bay\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/eucalypt-forest-jervis-bay.jpg 5472w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/eucalypt-forest-jervis-bay-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/eucalypt-forest-jervis-bay-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/eucalypt-forest-jervis-bay-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/eucalypt-forest-jervis-bay-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The individual colours are garish and unbroken, but because they lie so close together in such small blotches, they tone each other down without losing their effect.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>August Endell&#8217;s first commission was for the Hof-Atelier Elvira, a photography studio in Munich, built and decorated in 1896-97.\u00a0 The interior decor was highly individual, even bizarre, but partly reflected Endell&#8217;s belief that &#8216;the most wonderful motifs&#8217; are to be found on tree bark.\u00a0 Look, for example, at the studio staircase, to see how the organic pattern resembles the cracks in bark:<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-6718 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?attachment_id=6736'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/1024px-atelier_elvira_staircase-1900-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?attachment_id=6738'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/fallen-branch-wangaratta-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>You can guess from the age of the staircase photo that the building no longer exists.\u00a0 It was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944.\u00a0 Hooray for photos!<\/p>\n<p>In 1896, in an article about his theory of art, Endell said:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Someone who has never been sent into raptures by the exquisite swaying of a blade of grass, the wondrous implacability of a thistle leaf, the austere youthfulness of burgeoning leaf buds, who has never been seized and touched to the core of his being by the massive shape of a tree root, the imperturbable strength of split bark, the slender suppleness of the trunk of a birch, the profound peacefulness of an expanse of leaves, knows nothing of the beauty of forms.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Cited in <em>Art Nouveau<\/em>, Gabriele Fahr-Becker)<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-6718 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?attachment_id=6751'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/new-leaves-on-hyatt-tree-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-2-6751\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-2-6751'>\n\t\t\t\t&#8230; the massive shape of a tree root\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The year 2014 is all but over;\u00a0 I want to finish it on a beautiful note.\u00a0 In an antique shop at Jervis Bay, in a holiday mood, I found Fahr-Becker&#8217;s <em>Art Nouveau<\/em> still sealed in protective plastic yet offered for a small price.\u00a0 I took it back to the beach house, peeled away its covering and flicked through the large glossy pages.\u00a0 At around the middle of the book, 232 pages in, the Endell quotation on bark brought me to a halt.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t turn the page, but closed the book.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t want to forget his urging to &#8216;go right up to the trunk&#8217;
