{"id":6864,"date":"2015-05-30T10:07:47","date_gmt":"2015-05-30T00:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/?p=6864"},"modified":"2019-12-06T15:54:39","modified_gmt":"2019-12-06T04:54:39","slug":"japanese-gardens-helwan-cairo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=6864","title":{"rendered":"Japanese Gardens, Helwan, Cairo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the 1800s, the town of Helwan was Egypt&#8217;s winter resort for the wealthy.\u00a0 During the Second World War, British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers were resident in the area and visited these gardens constructed in 1917 by the architect Zulfiqar Pasha, who gave them a Japanese theme with about forty Buddha statues, elephants, a Japanese-style bridge and pagodas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?attachment_id=6878\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6878 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/japanese_gardens_helwan-cairo-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/japanese_gardens_helwan-cairo-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/japanese_gardens_helwan-cairo-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/japanese_gardens_helwan-cairo-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/japanese_gardens_helwan-cairo-1200x802.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the 1952 revolution the gardens were neglected and Helwan became an industrial area.\u00a0 However, about a decade ago, with help from the Japanese Embassy, they were restored as a Japanese Garden.\u00a0 Once more it has become a desirable escape from the crowds of Cairo.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just tourists who enjoy the space;\u00a0 most Muslim locals also love it as a green oasis amid decrepit concrete buildings, even accepting the novelty of Buddha statues in a Japanese garden, the only one in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2488\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2488\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?attachment_id=2488\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2488 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/japanese_gardens_cairo_resized-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/japanese_gardens_cairo_resized-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/japanese_gardens_cairo_resized-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/japanese_gardens_cairo_resized-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/japanese_gardens_cairo_resized-1200x799.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Japanese Gardens, Helwan, Cairo, 1941<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an earlier blog post, I had previously posted the photo of the seated Buddha on a lotus flower and the three elephants, but I deleted it.\u00a0 However, I&#8217;m posting it again, because today I was reminded of the value of photos.<\/p>\n<p>When I went searching online for current images of these statues, I found that my photo had been copied before I deleted it, and then it was used to illustrate a couple of stories about the demise of the statues.
