{"id":6944,"date":"2015-04-14T07:37:38","date_gmt":"2015-04-14T07:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/?p=6944"},"modified":"2015-04-14T07:37:38","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T07:37:38","slug":"chopins-raindrop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=6944","title":{"rendered":"Chopin&#039;s Raindrop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today in Valldemossa, Mallorca, I heard two Chopin piano concerts, each lasting ten minutes.\u00a0 They were included with the ticket to the Real Cartuja Municipal Museum which exhibits Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin and George Sand memorabilia in a few cells of the old monastery.\u00a0 Though one of Chopin&#8217;s pianos is present in another cell, the Celda de Chopin (a different, privately owned museum), it was not played today;\u00a0 the pianist played on a grand piano in the adjoining Palace of King Sancho, who owned the monastery before it was a monastery.<\/p>\n<p>The Chopin pieces give visitors an impression of the sounds that drifted from the monks&#8217; cells where he was staying in the winter of 1838\/39.\u00a0 Though he began his sojourn by composing on a borrowed instrument, in the last few weeks of his stay his new Pleyel piano arrived from Paris.\u00a0 In the cold bare cells he composed a few Preludes, a Polonaise, a Ballade, a Scherzo \u2013 pieces now famous. Yet if Chopin\u2019s name is famous here, it is a modern phenomenon;\u00a0 when he and his lover, George Sand, were staying in Valldemossa, they were anything but popular, he having a disease which in the Mallorcan mind was contagious and deadly, and she wearing men&#8217;s clothes and not attending mass on Sunday.\u00a0 Even two years later when she wrote her account of their stay, <i>Un Hiver \u00e0 Majorque<\/i>, Sand did not reveal the name of her companion but discreetly referred to him as the sick one, the invalid, our friend, someone in my family.<\/p>\n<p>Time passed, and the world learnt that Chopin had been here, had composed here.\u00a0 They wanted to come and feel his presence, hear the echoes of his music in the cloisters, see his music scores with all their corrections exhibited on the walls.<\/p>\n<p>George&#8217;s photos and images also adorn both of the museums, samples of writings by her and about her are exhibited under glass<i>,<\/i> with no indication of who wrote what.\u00a0 Copies of paintings of Sand, Chopin and their contemporaries hang on the walls.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6933\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6933\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/04\/george-sand-display-valldemossa.jpg?w=750\" alt=\"Display for George Sand in Chopin Museum, Valldemossa\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/george-sand-display-valldemossa.jpg 5472w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/george-sand-display-valldemossa-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/george-sand-display-valldemossa-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/george-sand-display-valldemossa-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/george-sand-display-valldemossa-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Display for George Sand in the Celda de Chopin Museum, Valldemossa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The view from each cell is stunning, a distant perspective with a foreground of Mediterranean plantings in a monk\u2019s garden. While Chopin composed, Sand finished <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunypress.edu\/p-6051-spiridion.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Spiridion<\/i><\/a>, the novel she\u2019d begun a year earlier, coincidentally about monks in a monastery. An English translation by Shirley Kerby James, <i>A Winter in Mallorca<\/i>, sells well.
