{"id":7329,"date":"2015-07-27T04:41:40","date_gmt":"2015-07-26T17:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.wordpress.com\/?p=7329"},"modified":"2018-10-27T18:24:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T07:24:50","slug":"darcey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/?p=7329","title":{"rendered":"D&#8217;arcey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tonight at 7.52 when it was 6 degrees Celsius and blowing an icy gale, I took this photo of D&#8217;arcey Richard Nottingham Shaw&#8217;s name projected onto the Australian War Memorial.\u00a0 It was hard to hold my camera still in the wind, but the photo is not too bad.\u00a0 D&#8217;arcey was killed in action on The Somme in France in 1917, yet he has no grave;\u00a0 his remains were never found.\u00a0 On his Roll of Honour card, digitally available on the A.W.M. website, it is noted that D&#8217;arcey Shaw&#8217;s wounds were the result of being buried twice from bombs bursting near him in Pozi\u00e8res.\u00a0 How ironic that they should write that, when in the end he was buried nowhere.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7335\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7335\" style=\"width: 525px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7335 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drn-shaw-awm-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"DRN Shaw AWM\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drn-shaw-awm-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drn-shaw-awm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drn-shaw-awm-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/soundslikewish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/drn-shaw-awm-1200x800.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">D R N Shaw, projected onto Australian War Memorial, 26th July 2015<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Because he died defending Australia, his name was written in light for 30 seconds tonight, perhaps for my benefit alone.\u00a0 As far as I know, none of his other family members live in Canberra.\u00a0 Since I&#8217;m just ten minutes away, it&#8217;s easy to whip down to the Memorial and see the names when they come up between sunset and sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>D&#8217;arcey was my grandfather&#8217;s cousin.\u00a0 I want to remember him and his two brothers who also died in France, in the war to end all wars, because my grandfather was there too, but he didn&#8217;t die.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen-year-old D&#8217;arcey was the second son in his family to be killed in France.
