The photo I submitted for this week’s photo challenge, Journey, reminded me of a poem in my father’s poetry book about the hats in the photo:\u00a0 The Old Slouch Hat<\/em>. The name of the hat reflects the way it is worn ‘slouching’ on one side while the other side is often pinned against the crown to allow a rifle to be slung over the shoulder.\u00a0 It was worn by Australian soldiers in the Boer War and World War I, then again in World War II, and every war since.<\/p>\n

The handwriting is my father’s but the words are by a ‘soldier in Tobruk’, Libya.\u00a0 My transcription follows these images.<\/p>\n

The old slouch hat,
\nIt’s not exactly glamorous,\"\"<\/a>
\nThe old slouch hat,
\nIt’s not exactly chic.
\nBut there’s something more than beauty,
\nA glorious tradition,
\nIn the old slouch hat
\nThat will ever to it stick.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s not exactly elegant,
\nThe old slouch hat,
\nIt might be rather plain.
\nBut it showed the world the stuff
\nThat Aus. sons were made of,
\nDid the old slouch hat,
\nAnd it’s doing it again<\/span>.<\/p>\n
